The Marchand Ferry Company was incorporated in Pennsylvania in 1879 and based in Coal Center.
The ferry ran across the Monongahela River between the lower end Coal Center and the upper end Newell.
Originally was the ferry was powered by hand poles. The company eventually went to a steam engine and then used an electric engine for a short time. However a Coast Guard ruling later required ferry operators to use of a gas powered motor, mounted on the boat, so electric was shuttled.
A private operator ran the Marchand in its beginning. A group of five men purchased the ferry operated it until 1951 when it was taken over by Robert L. Simpson of Roscoe.
