The Peoples Transfer Company. Stock issued July 7, 1891 at Syracuse, New York. Incorporated in the State of New York.<br>Gold embossed company seal lower left. Certificate<br>No. 28<br>was issued to<br>Edson Weeks (company treasurer)<br>for 10 shares of capital stock ($50 per share). Company capital was<br>$30,000<br>. Hand signed by company<br>president Newell Pettie<br>and<br>treasurer Edson Weeks<br>. Certificate is about 8” x 11.” Black print on vellum paper.<br>Beautifully engraved vignettes with state seal of New York between two allegorical figures (top center), and an open horse-drawn carriage with two drivers and two passengers (bottom right).<br>(lot includes photocopy of letter dated July 2, 1891 written on Vanderbilt House hotel letterhead referencing Peoples Transfer Company and president Newell Pettie:<br>“<br>In consideration of two (200) hundred dollars to me in hand paid by Newell Pettie for the Peoples Transfer Co. I sell and assign the sorrel horse, harness, wagon sleigh, & blanks used by me transferring baggage for the Vanderbilt House Syracuse. Wm. Clary”)<br>The People’s Transfer Company was formed in 1891 as a baggage-luggage-carriage transfer business in Syracuse, New York, for the Vanderbilt House hotel situated on the southeast corner of East Washington and South Warren streets in Syracuse.
